Support and setup

Install guides for every supported device, fixes for the things that actually go wrong, and a way to reach a person.

Setup guides

Early-access builds are sideloaded. Each guide takes a few minutes with the remote you already have.

Install on Fire TV (early access sideload)

  1. On the TV, open Settings, then My Fire TV, then Developer Options, and turn on Apps from Unknown Sources. Newer Fire OS versions ask per app: allow it for Downloader.
  2. Install the Downloader app from the Amazon store.
  3. Open Downloader and enter the build URL from your early-access email.
  4. Install, then open Virumo from Your Apps & Channels.

We'll never ask you to disable other security settings, and the APK is signed; if a site offers a "Virumo" download we didn't send you, don't install it.

Install on NVIDIA Shield, Android TV and Google TV

  1. Open Settings, then Apps, then Security & restrictions, and turn on Unknown sources for the app you'll install with.
  2. Use Downloader or a file manager to fetch the build URL from your early-access email.
  3. If you're comfortable at a terminal, adb install virumo.apk over your network does the same job.
  4. Install, then open Virumo from the launcher's apps row.

Add an M3U playlist

  1. Open Setup, then M3U.
  2. Paste your playlist URL. Long-press the field to bring up the on-screen keyboard; the URL usually ends .m3u or .m3u8.
  3. Save. Virumo loads the channels, then the guide.

Add an Xtream login

  1. Open Setup, then Xtream.
  2. Enter the server as a host, or host:port if your provider gave you one. Leave HTTPS unticked unless your provider tells you otherwise.
  3. Enter your username, then your password. Both are encrypted on the device.
  4. Save. Live, films, series and the guide load from the panel.

02 · Troubleshooting

When something goes wrong

HTTPS fails, or "secure connection failed"

Most Xtream panels only serve plain http, and some present certificates your device won't trust. Untick HTTPS and try again. Virumo tells you when a connection isn't secure rather than hiding it.

Rewind is unavailable on a channel

Live rewind needs a channel streamed as MPEG-TS. Channels delivered as HLS play normally, but can't be buffered for rewind yet, so Virumo shows a short notice instead of a control that does nothing.

Channels won't play

A channel that's off air or down at the provider fails the same way in every player. Check a second channel: if that plays, the problem is upstream. If nothing plays, re-check your playlist URL or Xtream login.

No listings in the guide

Check the EPG URL in Setup, or ask your provider for their XMLTV address. Xtream panels supply listings themselves. The guide refreshes when you open it, so give it a few seconds on the first load.

Only one stream will start in multi-view

Every pane needs a connection of its own. Either use an account that allows several at once, or add a second playlist and let Virumo take one connection from each. A provider selling "1 connection" will stop the second stream, and that limit is theirs rather than the app's.

Buffering

Check your provider's connection limit first: Virumo uses one connection per stream it is playing, so another device or player still streaming will hold your slot. On a Shield, Ethernet beats Wi-Fi every time. 4K over 2.4GHz Wi-Fi rarely works, whatever the player.

The app feels slow on the 2018 Stick

Restart the stick, and close anything left running in the background to free memory. The 2018 Stick is the floor device we tune against, so tell us if it still feels slow.

03 · Questions

Straight answers.

Does Virumo include any channels?

No. Virumo is a player. It contains no channels, lists or links. You add a playlist or subscription that you're entitled to use.

Which playlist formats work?

M3U and M3U8 playlist links, and Xtream Codes logins (server, username, password). Programme guides load from XMLTV or from your Xtream panel.

Why did my Xtream server fail over HTTPS?

Most Xtream panels only serve plain http, and some use certificates your device won't trust. Leave the HTTPS option unticked unless your provider tells you otherwise. Virumo will tell you when a connection isn't secure.

Why doesn't rewind work on some channels?

Live rewind needs channels streamed as MPEG-TS. Channels delivered as HLS play normally but can't be buffered for rewind yet. Virumo shows a short notice on those channels instead of a control that does nothing.

Does it work on the original Fire TV Stick 4K?

Yes. The 2018 Stick is the floor device every build is tested on.

Does it cost anything?

Virumo is free during early access. Later, some optional features will be a one-off unlock. There's no subscription for the core app, and there never will be a version that comes with channels.

What data does Virumo collect?

None. There's no account, no analytics and no telemetry. Your playlist and credentials stay on your device. The full statement is on the privacy page.

Some channels won't play. Is that Virumo?

Usually not: a channel that's off air or down at the provider fails the same way in every player. Virumo tells you when a stream can't be reached and lets you move on with one press.

Does it work on phones and tablets?

Yes. Virumo picks a touch layout on a phone or tablet and the remote-first layout on a TV or stick. On phones you also get picture-in-picture and background audio.
